You Can Not Be Serious : Borg vs McEnroe
One of sport’s most iconic rivalry’s is re-enacted on screen by Sverrir Gudnason and Shia LaBeouf in the classic 2017 tennis film Borg vs McEnroe
It’s not a sport movie as such. It’s a drama about human beings that takes place in the arena of sports. We need to make tennis feel real, authentic, visceral . . .
Starring Shia LaBeouf as John McEnroe and Swedish newcomer Sverrir Gudnason as Björn Borg with Stellan Skarsgård as his coach, the film charts their intense rivalry during the 1970s and 1980s. Borg was known for his cool demeanor, whilst McEnroe was known for his fiery court-side meltdowns.
The Borg vs McEnroe film leads up to the 1980 Wimbledon final, often described as the greatest tennis match of all time (watch the legendary fourth-set tiebreak here). Mr Borg won Wimbledon five times in a row between 1976 and 1980, while Mr McEnroe later went on to win the 1981, 1983 and 1984 men’s singles finals at the All England Club.
The Sports biopic, filmed in Swedish and English, is directed by Dane Janus Metz Pedersen known for his 2010 Cannes festival war documentary Armadillo and for episodes of HBO’s True Detective.
