You might recognise the name Callum, particularly if you are fond of quintessentially British sports cars. After all, this is the man who gave us the Aston Martin Vanquish, the Jaguar XK and the, erm, Ford Puma.

Callum also more recently penned the futuristic Jaguar I-Pace EV before parting ways with the crew from Coventry to pursue his own endeavour. So far, we’ve seen things like opulent lounge chairs, cocktail shakers and even a bobsleigh for the British Bobsleigh Team, but now Callum Designs is going back to its roots with a high-performance, all-wheel-drive multi-terrain vehicle that’s powered by the latest battery and electric motor tech.

It’s badged Skye, and it plans to offer sports car “performance and weight of 1,150kg”, which the team says will result in 0-60mph achieved in under four seconds.

We know that’s not difficult, given the potency of electric motors, but Callum’s team has injected some serious off-road chops with a rugged space frame chassis and “trail-capable suspension that delivers appropriate ground clearance as well as comfort and compliance across diverse terrains,” its maker explains.

Stashed aboard, there’s a 42kWh lithium-ion battery that is said to offer a range of 170-miles, while the option of fast-charging technology will see the batteries brimmed in around 10 minutes.

As well as being exceptionally light for an EV, it’s also positively diminutive. Measuring just 4,047mm in length and 1,900mm in width, there’s enough room for four inside the fully enclosed cabin, although we imagine that feels pretty cramped in there.

Bossman Ian Callum says: “At four metres long, the Callum Skye is dramatically proportioned, with a concise exterior aesthetic driven by its capabilities. It has been designed to exceed expectations: minimal mass, maximum capability – exceptionally usable and an absolute joy to drive”.

Mere concept stuff, then? Absolutely not, as Callum Designs plans to have a fully functional and “for sale” Skye ready by spring 2024.

David Fairbairn, managing director at Callum, also believes there’s an appetite for a vehicle like this, stating that Skye addresses “a void in the market” that will “endow discerning owners with a bold, beautifully-engineered off-road vehicle that beckons to be enjoyed, giving a sense of fun, freedom and escapism”.

Keen beans can register their interest on the website now.
