Saint-Émilion’s Chteau Cheval Blanc has produced some of Bordeaux’s, and therefore the world’s, greatest ever wines. One of only four Saint-Emilion chteaux to be bestowed the title of Premier Grand Cru Classé A, Robert Parker has described Cheval Blanc as “one of the most elegant and noble wines in all of Bordeaux”. If the Right Bank had First Growths, this would certainly be one as it irrefutably produces the finest and most sought-after Cabernet Franc-based wines in the world. Sitting on the border of Pomerol, it has a diverse and unique terroir, and the style of the wine can vary quite dramatically from vintage to vintage. This is what makes it so exciting. Cheval Blanc aims to produce wine that emphasises the particular characteristics of that growing season; their team works with the vintage rather than struggling against it. In cooler vintages the wine might resemble a Grand Cru Burgundy, or in a hotter vintage it may display a New World ripeness. It has therefore become a particular favourite of the ‘wine geek’ as there is always something new to discover in each vintage. When wine critic Neal Martin tasted the 1995 at The Ledbury, he described it as “an outrageously decadent Cheval Blanc.” Jancis Robinson is also a fan, calling it “a very, very good 1995.” The nose of this hot vintage unfurls with blackcurrants, strawberries, raspberries, praline, coffee beans, raisins, new shoe leather, truffles and scoops of vanilla ice cream. The dense palate is sweet, spicy and plush – in part due to the higher than normal proportion of Merlot. This wine shows exactly why Cheval Blanc is one of the world’s most intriguing wines.£595 per 750.00ml
