Reserva De La Familia Extra Añejo Tequila – 2017 Edition
To quote Don Corleone: “A man who doesn’t spend time with his family can never be a real man.” So maybe we should spend some quality time with the head of José Cuervo’s familia… First released in 1995 to celebrate their 200th birthday, José Cuervo Reserva de la Familia is the world’s first extra-añejo (long aged) Tequila. The liquid is distilled at the La Rojena distillery, the oldest in Latin America, from agave hearts that have taken up to twelve years to ripen. It’s then matured for a minimum of two years in a combination of American and French oak barrels, but some of the reserve components maybe 30 years old. The outcome is breathtakingly beautiful, the ultimate expression from Jose Cuervo and maybe even the pinnacle of Tequila. Cognac-like in its complexity and smoothness, you’ll discover oak-smoked almonds, apple crumble, green olives, cinnamon French toast, dill-infused pickle brine, Demerara sugar, worn leather, barbequed pineapple, sawdust and sweet vanilla. Each bottle is numbered, dated and hand-dipped in wax to seal it. Every year the box is designed by a different Mexican artist making each vintage a collector’s item. The 2017 Edition – featuring a golden monkey on a midnight blue background – was created by the highly acclaimed Abraham Cruzvillegas. His multimedia exhibition at the José Cuervo Cultural Centre entitled Tequioh, paid homage to the workers, the tools, the rain, the pollinating bats and the plants that make this exceptional spirit possible.
