The Spirit Of Oaxaca : Del Maguey Mezcal
There is a saying that “You don’t find Mezcal. Mezcal finds you!” Del Maguey Founder, Mr Ron Cooper
Del Maguey Single Village Mezcal was founded in 1995 by Mezcal guru Mr. Ron Cooper, through deep cultural relationships with indigenous Mexican Indians that farm ‘maguey’ in and around the remote villages of Oaxaca, Mexico.
Del Maguey Mezcal
Del Maguey harnesses ancient organic processes, creating an artisan Mezcal produced in an original handcrafted way that predates the Spanish conquest. In its true form Mezcal can be considered among the finest and purest spirits available in the world. It is referred to as the ‘Mother of Tequila’, as any time an agave-based distillate is made it is called Mezcal. It is worth noting that the idea of gusanos (worms) in the bottle has no serious place in a conversation about true, authentic Mezcal like Del Maguey Mezcal Vida.
Mezcal Vida has good funk on the nose combined with sweet dark fruits like dates and raisins.
The taste is very funky with nice pepper on the tongue combined with sweet and smokey goodness. There’s a floral undertone and some sour tones which result in a symphony of sweet, smokey, sour and spicy. The finish is very long and strong.
Beautifully crafted and wonderfully complex, it’s hard not to fall for the Mezcal Vida.
The way Mezcal affects one’s palate and the way it warms the chest, throat and mouth are quite unique, and Del Maguey Mezcal Vida does an excellent job transcending others. The finest Mezcals aren’t cheap, but good examples offer a distinctive smoky experience and are best enjoyed neat from a traditional clay copita (cup) or after a good Taco.
